Proxy servers are defined in multiple ways and have several  uses. In this post I will explain the most commonly used forms: using proxy servers from staying anonymous and hiding your real IP, accessing blocked content, using proxies with bots. I will also show you where to find free proxies, free proxies lists and about the different types of proxies.

The proxy server is a server that acts as an intermediary link for request from the client to the server. When you want to surf anonymously you need to use a proxy server, so the remote server (for example a website) sees your proxy ip address and not your real one. Proxy servers can be used for different kind of traffic such as http, https, ftp etc.

A proxy has the following format: - {IP Address}:{Port Number}.

Another usage of proxy servers is to access content and websites that are blocked in your country. By using a proxy server the website you are trying to access sees the IP of the proxy server and thinks that your location is that of the proxy server.  You may be wondering, is that everything? The answer is no. You have to find the right proxy to ensure your privacy and anonymity.

Proxy Types

There are different proxy types. I will explain below the three main proxy types, http, https and socks. After that I will explain the three modes for each of http / https proxies: transparent, anonymous and high anonymous.

HTTP Proxy

Http proxy is the most common type of proxy and the easiest one to find. This kind of proxy works only with websites and software that use HTTP. Its main goal is to manage functioning of browsers and other programs that use Http. In case of websites you won’t be able to use this kind of proxy with any website that uses https in the address bar. The only benefit of this type of proxy is that it is fast and common.

On the other hand you are limited to http and in many cases your real IP isn’t hidden by this type of proxy. Only high anonymous proxies hide your real IP.

This kind of proxy is used for secure connection when it is needed to transmit sensitive information. In principle a secure encrypted connection is made to the remote server, but the proxy server doesn’t participate in the encryption and decryption. All of that is done by the client (ex: browser) and the remote server. With this kind of proxy it is almost impossible to track the transmitted information. Https proxy can be used in SMTP, POP3, IMAP etc. Different kinds of https proxies may append your original IP in a request header, so you should search for high anonymity proxies.

Socks Proxy

Socks proxy (also called Sox , Socs , Soks by different people) is the most progressive protocol of data transmission. This type of proxy was submitted to many changes over time and now it is offered in two types: Socks4 and Socks5. A socks client is between application and transport levels in the network. Socks server is on application level. It can be said that the server does not relate to protocols of high level. The protocol is mostly used for DNS lookup and UDP communication.

This type of proxy provides total anonymity. They don’t transmit information about your real IP address. The remote web server sees the IP of the socks only. Usually this protocol may also work with other protocols such as HTTPS, HTTP, FTP and others.

Transparent Proxy

A transparent proxy doesn’t offer you anonymity. This kind of proxy forwards your request and IP address to the destination server without hiding any information or header. You can use this kind of proxy inside your local area network or office in order to filter or block certain websites. Another commonly use is to browse websites that are blocked in your country. In  this case you don’t really need to hide your real IP, instead you just want to access the blocked content.

Anonymous Proxy

Anonymous proxies hide your IP address and other information that pass through it. This is a very useful kind of proxy when you don’t want your data to be stolen by malicious individuals. Even normal users can use this kind of proxy to protect themselves from hackers and people who snoop through their IP address.

Highly Anonymous Proxy

Anonymous proxies hide the information that passes through them and your real IP address. The difference between this kind of proxy and anonymous proxies is that anonymous proxies may be detected as proxies. In both cases your real IP is hidden, but with anonymous proxy the remote server may detect that you are using a proxy. With high anonymous proxy it seems like you are accessing the remote server directly with the high anonymous proxy IP.

Shared Proxy

Many times you can hear about shared proxies and that they are really cheap. As the name implies these kind of proxies are shared between many users.

The main disadvantages are:

  • Low speed during peak hours when many users use them
  • Many users use the same IP address (the address of the proxy) and this may result in ban in different websites or get you blacklisted

Dedicated Proxy

A dedicated proxy is used by only one user. This kind of proxy is very fast because no other user can use it. You can also be sure that you will never get blacklisted or banned by using this kind of proxy. It is the same as using your public IP.

The only disadvantage is that it is really expensive.

What kind of proxy should I use?

If you just want to access blocked website you can use either http or https proxies with transparent anonymity. If the website uses https you need an https proxy, otherwise using http proxy is fine. You don’t need to hide your real IP in this case.

If you want to use proxies with traffic bots, view bots or any  other kind  of bot you must use proxies that hide your real IP and the fact that you are using a proxy.  In this case you need https high anonymity proxies or sock proxies.
